Christmas Gift Ideas for Employees
Guides

How we pick

HR teams are spending the company’s money, and the worst outcome isn’t a cheap gift, it’s a gift everyone throws away. So every idea on this site has to pass six tests. Each card also has a “Where it disappoints” note, because every gift has a way to go wrong and you should know it before you order 200 of them.

1. The budget is the real budget

Prices on each card are typical item prices. Shipping, packaging, personalization and platform fees come on top, and we flag them where they change the picture: a $15 gift that costs $27 delivered is a $27 gift.

2. It works for the whole team, including remote staff

Most teams now have someone working from home or another country. If a gift only works for people in the office, we say so, and we point to an equivalent for everyone else. Nobody should get a smaller version of the thank-you.

3. It arrives before the holidays

Personalization, bulk production, shipping and customs all take time, and we flag gifts where lead time is the catch. A gift that arrives on January 3 is an apology, not a gift.

4. It fits almost everyone

We avoid gifts that depend on size, diet, taste or habits the giver can’t see: alcohol, scented products, clothing sizes, nut-heavy food. When an idea only works for some people, we say who.

5. It’s still used in January

Our test for memorability is simple: will this be in use, or talked about, a month later? Things people use every day, and moments that involve their family, pass. Novelty items and decorations usually don’t.

6. No logo

Branded merchandise reads as marketing, not gratitude. We don’t recommend it as a gift. If the company’s name belongs anywhere, it belongs on the card.

What we don’t claim

We haven’t lab-tested every tumbler and blanket on this site. The “Where it disappoints” notes come from what goes wrong with these gifts in general: shipping, sizes, allergies, taxes, and the things people say they threw away. Prices are typical ranges at major US retailers, so check the listing before you buy.

The one product we know inside out is our own: Santa for Teams, idea #1 on every page. We tell you where it falls short too: it only makes sense for employees whose children still believe in Santa. For a team with few young parents, pair it with a gift for everyone. Read more on who we are and how we make money.
