Christmas Gift Ideas for Employees They’ll Actually Remember

Most employee Christmas gifts end up in a drawer by January: another branded mug, another candle nobody chose. The gifts people talk about are the ones that feel personal, respect their time, or reach their family. Below are 15 ideas that do at least one of those things, with honest prices and a note on when each one works.

Santa for Teams

A call from Santa for your employees’ kids

Instead of another object, give each family a Santa video call, phone call or personalized video, where Santa says their child’s name. Parents fill in the details themselves, so HR never collects children’s data. Nothing to ship, and it works for office and remote teams alike.

  • ✓ Video call, phone call or video
  • ✓ 29 languages, any time zone
  • ✓ No shipping, pay by invoice
  • ✓ HR never handles kids’ data

Where it disappoints: it only works for employees whose kids still believe in Santa. For a team with few young parents, pair it with a gift for everyone.

Best overall

A quality insulated tumbler

$20–45📦 Needs shipping

It gets used every single day, on the commute, at the desk and at home. That daily use is what makes a gift feel generous a month later.

Where it disappoints: Half the office may already own one. Cheap no-name tumblers also leak through the lid, so read reviews for “leak-proof” before buying 50.

Tip: Pick a neutral color and skip the logo. A logo turns a gift into company merchandise.

A gourmet hot cocoa or coffee sampler

$15–30📦 Needs shipping

Consumable gifts never become clutter, and a sampler lets people try something they wouldn’t buy for themselves.

Where it disappoints: Samplers with tiny portions feel stingy once opened. Count the servings, not the size of the box.

Tip: Offer a decaf or tea option for people who don’t drink coffee.

Best free gift

An extra paid day off

1 day of payroll💚 Free or almost free

Ask employees what they want and time off comes near the top of the list. A “golden ticket” day they can use in January costs nothing to ship and nobody regifts it.

Where it disappoints: It falls flat if the team is too busy to take it. Set a real deadline, like the end of March, and make managers protect it.

Tip: Put it in writing on a card so it feels like a gift, not a policy update.

5

Food delivery credit

$25–50📧 Arrives by email

A night off from cooking in the December rush is a gift the whole household feels. It arrives by email and works in almost every city.

Where it disappoints: Delivery apps don’t work in small towns, and fees eat a $25 credit fast. Check coverage before you send it to everyone.

Tip: Remember that gift cards count as taxable wages in the US, even small ones. Payroll may need to gross them up.

6

A cozy throw blanket

$25–40📦 Needs shipping

It’s the gift people are most likely to still use next winter. Sherpa or knit throws look expensive for what they cost.

Where it disappoints: Thin fleece looks fine in photos and pills after one wash. Look for a stated weight or “sherpa” lining.

7

A wireless charging pad

$15–30📦 Needs shipping

It’s useful on a desk or a nightstand, and it works for almost everyone because most new phones charge wirelessly.

Where it disappoints: Slow pads (5 W) frustrate people used to fast chargers, and thick phone cases block charging. Buy 15 W with a wall adapter included.

Tip: A pad or stand that charges a phone and earbuds together is worth a few dollars more.

8

A personalized notebook

$15–25📦 Needs shipping

A monogram costs little but shows you thought about the person. It works especially well for people who take notes in meetings.

Where it disappoints: Personalization adds 1–2 weeks and one misspelled name ruins it. Collect names from HR records, not from memory.

9

A family board game

$20–35📦 Needs shipping

It’s a gift for the holidays at home, not for the office. Choose something simple enough for grandparents and kids to play together.

Where it disappoints: Games with long rules sit unopened. Anything that takes more than five minutes to learn is a gamble.

10

A snack box from around the world

$20–40📦 Needs shipping

It’s fun to open and fun to share, and it gives the team something to talk about the next week.

Where it disappoints: One allergy or diet (nut-free, halal, vegan) can make it unusable for someone. Offer an alternative.

Tip: Check for allergies. A nut-free box is the safest default.

11

A self-watering desk plant

$15–25📦 Needs shipping

It lasts long after the holidays, and a self-watering pot survives the two weeks the office is empty at New Year.

Where it disappoints: Live plants shipped in winter can arrive frozen. Order from a seller that ships with heat packs or hand them out in person.

Budget noise-cancelling earbuds

$50–80📦 Needs shipping

This is the premium option for a small team or a thank-you after a hard year. Open-plan offices and home offices are both noisy.

Where it disappoints: At this price noise cancelling is modest, and many people already own AirPods. It works best when people can pick color or model.

13

A local experience voucher

$30–75🎟️ Experience

Cinema tickets, a restaurant voucher or a class at a local studio give people a memory rather than an object.

Where it disappoints: Vouchers expire, and people forget them. Pick ones valid for at least a year and send a reminder in March.

Tip: Pick places near where people live, not near the office.

14

A donation in their name

Any amount📧 Arrives by email

It suits people who say they don’t need anything. It works best when employees choose the cause from a short list.

Where it disappoints: Chosen for them, it can feel like the company is taking credit. Let people pick the cause.

Best under $10

A handwritten thank-you card

$2–5💚 Free or almost free

It isn’t a gift on its own, but it doubles the value of any gift on this list. Mention one specific thing the person did this year.

Where it disappoints: A generic “thanks for all your hard work” undoes the point. If you can’t name one specific thing, the card reads as a form letter.

Physical vs digital gift

The first decision isn’t what to buy, it’s whether the gift needs to travel. Physical gifts need addresses, shipping and lead time. Digital gifts arrive the same day, wherever people are.

Who writes this. Andrei Zhizdra builds Santa AI, which made more than 14,000 Santa greetings for families last Christmas. HR teams asked us what to give instead of another mug, and this guide is the answer.

How we choose. We favor gifts people use every day, gifts that reach families, and gifts that don’t create shipping headaches. Prices are typical ranges at major US retailers. Our six tests

What we skip. Logo merchandise, scented products and anything that ends up in a drawer by January. Idea #1 is our own product, and we say so. How we make money

Questions HR teams ask

How much should I spend on an employee Christmas gift?

Most companies spend somewhere between $10 and $75 per person. The amount matters less than consistency: give everyone on the same team the same value, and put more thought, not more money, into how the gift is presented.

Are employee Christmas gifts taxable?

In the US, cash and gift cards are always taxable wages, whatever the amount. Small non-cash items, like a holiday food basket or a tumbler, usually count as tax-free de minimis benefits. In the UK, gifts up to £50 per person can qualify as trivial benefits. Check with your payroll provider before you buy.

What is a good Christmas gift for a large number of employees?

Pick something that doesn’t depend on size, taste or diet, and that doesn’t need individual shipping. Digital gifts are the easiest to scale: one list of emails and everyone gets theirs the same day. See our bulk gift guide for more.

When should I order employee Christmas gifts?

Physical gifts should be ordered by mid-November to avoid shipping delays, especially for remote teams. Digital gifts can be ordered as late as mid-December. The best time to hand gifts out is the first half of December, before people start their holidays.

Should the gift have our company logo on it?

Usually not. Branded items feel like marketing material, not a gift. If you want the gift to carry your company’s name, put it on the card or the invitation, not on the item.
